Interview with the Latino Media Collective on “Zero Tolerance” Policing

Thanks to the Latino Media Collective on WPFW for having me on the show today to talk about “zero tolerance” policing in Latin America.

You can find my article, “Giuliani in Rio,” at the Jacobin magazine website. An archived recording of today’s interview is available here.

UPDATE (Jan. 23, 2016):

Thanks to the Latino Media Collective and WPFW, this interview now has a permanent home as the fifth episode of the Periphery podcast.

Episode 4 of Periphery: “U.S.-Cuba Relations: Then and Now” with Dr. Philip Brenner

Co-host and co-producer Angelika Albaladejo and I worked really hard to put together the latest episode of Periphery. We talked to my former professor, Dr. Philip Brenner of American University, about the history of the relationship between Cuba and the United States as well as the recent announcement that both countries will begin normalizing relations for the first time in over half a century.

These are not simple subjects, but Dr. Brenner is one of the top scholars in this field and he does a great job of laying out the facts clearly and concisely. I’m very proud and extremely grateful to have the opportunity to share his expertise with our audience.

Of course, you should follow Periphery on Twitter (@Periphery_), like our Facebook page and subscribe on iTunes. You should also check out our blog where we posted the episode along with links to the sources we used and more information on the topics we discussed. Also, don’t miss the accompanying playlist we put together with a bunch of amazing songs by both Cuban and American musicians.

Episode 3 of Periphery: “The History and Future of the Drug War” with Sanho Tree

For the third episode of Periphery, co-host/co-producer Angelika Albaldejo and I spoke with Sanho Tree, the director of the drug policy project at the Institute for Policy Studies. We talked with Sanho about the history of drugs and the drug war, both in the U.S. and abroad.

Sanho is one of the top experts in the drug policy field and his unconventional professional background gives him a unique perspective on these issues. We are really grateful that we got to speak with him and even more grateful that we get to share our interview with our audience.

Of course, you should follow Periphery on Twitter (@Periphery_), like our Facebook page and subscribe on iTunes. You should also check out our blog where we posted the episode along with links to the sources we used and more information on the topics we discussed.

Episode 2 of Periphery: “The Overcriminalization of Immigrants” with Jose Magaña Salgado

In the second episode of Periphery, Angelika Albaladejo and I interviewed Jose Magaña-Salgado, an attorney and policy advocate at the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) in Washington DC. We talked with Jose about the overcriminalization of immigrants in the United States.

I’ve written a fair amount about US immigration policies and practices on this blog in the past. Also, as Jose mentions in the episode, immigration issues are often related to foreign policy issues, some of which Angelika and I touched on in our conversation with Sarah Kinosian in our first episode on the humanitarian crisis brewing in Honduras.

Of course you should follow Periphery on Twitter (@Periphery_), like our Facebook page and subscribe on iTunes, but you should also check out our blog where we posted the episode along with links to the sources we used and more information on the topics we discussed.

Launch of New Podcast “Periphery”

Last night, Angelika Albaladejo and I launched a new podcast called “Periphery.” We’ll be producing periodic episodes that cover human rights, social justice, politics and culture in the Americas, focusing on people and groups on the periphery of society.

For our first episode, we interviewed our former co-worker at the Center for International Policy, Sarah Kinosian, about her new report on violence, migration and militarization in Honduras.

Check out the Periphery website for Episode One, where you can find links to tons of extra resources about these issues. Also, don’t forget to follow us on Twitter at @Periphery_  and like our page on Facebook! Subscribe through iTunes using this link.
